Do you want to get more involved in our mission to positively impact lives? New World Independent Living Program is always happy to work with volunteers in a variety of ways. Just choose the best for you!
1. Mentor a New World Participant:
Youth that come to our homes have most often experienced one or more traumatic events in their life. Experiences may include: immediate removal from their biological family, homelessness, victimization of abuse, neglect, lack of educational support, malnutrition, and/or victims/ witnesses of domestic or other violence. Our goal is to help minimize the effects of past, negative experiences and help cultivate a new, positive life perspective. We want youth to know that their life has value and that their past experiences do not have to dictate their future paths.
Furthermore, teen boys are less likely to be placed in foster care or adopted. Most boys remain in New World until they emancipate at age 18 or 22. New World believes that each child should have technical skills, life skills, an educational plan and confidence to transition into adulthood and a productive life on their own.
Having an adult friend who is not a parent is a priceless asset to a child, particularly for those who do not have traditional "parents" and may never get adopted. We hope to find and partner with men in the community who are willing to invest his time and interest in a New World participant...not necessarily to teach him reading, fractions, or history, but to show him how one man lives and survives in the world. How will boys become men if they are not shown how? If you are willing to offer a few hours of your time, please contact us today! We are looking forward to hearing from you!
2. Adopt a New World Home or Participant:
Planning a positive course of action for our participants takes a great deal of support. The permeating misconception is that there are plenty of funds and donated items available to the residents of group homes. Unfortunately, this is truly a myth. While State and Federal funding does allows the participants to be taken care of well, there are many needs that are left to be desired. If you are seriously considering how you, your family, or your company can contribute to the New World mission, we encourage you to consider adopting a home or a participant at a level of giving that is comfortable for you.
The form and amount of items donated can be specifically tailored to your desired level of giving. Some families in the community choose to donate a bag of groceries to one of the homes per month while a local company offers a large monetary donation once a year. However you choose to contribute, great or small, we appreciate you!
