New World staff was busy this quarter working with youth in any areas that will help prepare youth for life on their own. Our accomplishments this quarter include:
Focus on School: Education comes first. So, a lot of emphasis was on supporting good grades and good behavior at school. The program participants are doing much better in school this quarter, which is illustrated by the fact that four of the boys are attending Vista Del Lago High School, a comprehensive high school which allows them the opportunity to participate in a wider variety of extracurricular activities and programs as compared to continuation high schools. One of participant is eager to play on the football team!
Work Experience: As the youth begin to prepare for the summer months, the Education Liaison continues to spend a great deal of time working with the participants to identify career interests and potential summer job opportunities. Two participants are already exploring their talents through a work experience program at two different schools. One youth is in enjoying a program focused on culinary arts while the other is exploring computer networking.
College Exposure: Participants have been attending a wonderful life skills workshop each Monday, as we continue to prepare them for life on their own. This workshop is held on the campus of Riverside Community College. Not only is the program assisting the participants in gaining the life skills that they so desperately need, they are also being
exposed to the college environment and atmosphere regularly.
Guest Speakers: While there were several guest speakers that came to speak with the youth this quarter, the speaker from Immaculate Care Center offered a presentation that should certainly be highlighted: a Juvenile Parole Officer brought in some of her clients to speak to the boys about the pitfalls of living lives of crime.
